Carrier Oils

When combined with a solution of sodium hydroxide (lye) and distilled water, the fatty acids in oils and butters undergo a chemical reaction and are transformed into soap. Coconut oil adds hardness and cleansing power to my soaps. Castor oil produces a rich lather. Olive, sunflower, sweet almond, and avocado oils contain beneficial nutrients like vitamins A and E to soften and condition skin.

Essential Oils

Commonly used for aromatherapy, essential oils provide the fragrance in my soaps. Essential oils are distilled from plant parts such as leaves, flowers, twigs, and bark. Tremendous amounts of plant material are required to create these potent concentrates. I only use pure essential oils, not lab-synthesized “scent oils.” Most soaps have a combination of three scents, acting as base, middle, and top notes.

Natural Colorants

From the start, a core part of the idea for this company was to match the colors of my soaps with the birds they are named for. I would love to create soaps that reflect the vibrant colors of the avian world, but I refuse to use chemical dyes or mineral pigments with dubious claims of being all natural. You may notice that the colors in my soaps are susceptible to fading if the product is left exposed to direct sunlight.

Most ingredients in Refuge Soap products are certified organic.

Note: All products are made with shared equipment that regularly comes into contact with all the ingredients I use, including almond and coconut oils. Please read ingredients carefully and do not use products if you have allergy concerns.
